Mathematics graduate students who are TAs hold office hours in RE-129. Any TA can help with any course they have some knowledge about, when they are not busy with students in their assigned courses. Make sure you use this great resource!

Software help

If you decide to use Macaulay2, you might want to consult a chapter by Bernd Sturmfels from a book on Macaulay2.
Information on how to use Mathematica/Maple for computations with Gröbner bases may be found in Appendix C of the textbook.
(Note: Maple packages tend to be rather slow in comparison with a dedicated system such as Macaulay2.)

Help with typing math: TeX, etc.

You are encouraged to type your assignments. You can access LaTeX in the computer labs; more information and help can be found on this departmental page. Note: for Macs, I recommend TeXShop.
You might also consider using the what-you-see-is-what-you-get text editor TeXmacs; it makes it unnecessary for you to learn the LaTeX typesetting language while producing output of comparable quality. The program is freely downloadable, available for various platforms, able to import and export LaTeX files, and offers a plugin for Macaulay 2.

Additional course policies

Grading	Homework is worth 20% of the grade; in-class quizzes/discussion/participation 10%; mid-term exam 25%; final exam 25%, project 20%. The grading scale will be no more strict than A:90-100, B:80-89, C: 65-79, D:55-64.
Collaboration	You are encouraged to work in groups and are allowed to discuss homework problems with another student in the course, a TA, an IIT ARC tutor, or the instructor. However, the solutions should be written by you alone. Otherwise, it can be consdered plagiarism and you may receive no credit. Copying another student's solution for homework problem is considered plagiarism. In addition, after you have discussed any problems with others, you must not consult any notes from these discussions while you write up your solution. Also, you may not consult 3rd party resources, such as the internet, to look for solutions.
Academic integrity	The Code of Conduct and applicable penalties in the IIT Student Handbook apply.
Missed work	Assignments and exams cannot be made up except as approved by the instructor (e.g., due to official IIT activity or documented emergency). An exam missed for an excused reason must be made up promptly upon the student’s return, the time frame being at the discretion of the instructor.
Disability assistance	Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with documented disabilities. In order to receive accommodations, students must obtain a letter of accommodation from the Center for Disability Resources and make an appointment to speak with me [the instructor] as soon as possible.
