Karlin

If you do not yet have it, you can feel free to check out the WinSCP page for basic info on seeting that up. This page will only deal with the necessary setup to login to the karlin.math.iit.edu to use the IIT Math cluster.

When you are at IIT (on the IIT network) you can access Karlin directly with the address karlin.math.iit.edu. In general though, you need to tunnel in through the Laplace machine. This was set up for security purposes and requires an extra step to access karlin when not at IIT.

First thing's first, open up WinSCP and input the following on the opening page:
Obviously you need to replace mynameis with whatever your login is, and your correct password as well. Take a look at the address - it is just karlin, not karlin.math.iit.edu. You may be asking yourself how that works, and the answer is that it does not. If you do not provide additional information you cannot login because the computer won't know where to look. That additional information can be entered by clicking on the Tunnel tab, which is circled in red in the picture above.

Once you click on the Tunnel tab, you'll see a new page which looks similar to the page you just filled in. Here you are asked to fill in your Laplace login info. This is the tunnel through which you will access Karlin, so you need to input your Laplace login info. It may be the same as your Karlin login info, but not necessarily.
Once your screen looks similar to mine, you can save your session (refer to WinSCP Page if you forgot how) and login and you should be sent directly into Karlin without even seeing that you are accessing it through Laplace. You can also use the WinSCP client to send files through to Karlin without the step of first moving them to Laplace and then to Karlin like you would normally have to.
