What is SIAM at IIT?
SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) is the premier international professional organization for people in applied mathematics and related fields, including science and engineering. Our student chapter focuses on organizing events and activities to promote learning and involvement in applied mathematics. Its exact agenda is largely driven by the initiatives of the current officers and members. In the past few years we have organized a wide variety of events such as a chat with Fields medalist Martin Hairer, Chicago Area SIAM Student Conference, a series of talks for popularizing mathematics, a research poster competition for graduate and undergraduate students, a series of career and research talks by faculty both in and outside the department, tours of labs such as Argonne National Lab, and IIT Idea shop, a math competition for undergraduates, social gatherings like teas, BBQs, boardgame nights, trivia quizzes, and more. See below for a list of our activities.
Membership
All IIT students, both undergrad and grad students, regardless of their major, are eligible for
free membership with SIAM.
We encourage all students, regardless of major or home department, to join SIAM chapter at IIT.
Simply send an email to our contact email above (or, to any of the faculty advisors or any of the officers) stating your interest, and we will take it from there. The agenda and activities of the SIAM chapter are driven by the interests of the student members, join us and tell us what mathematical and social activities you are interested in.
SIAM Student chapter certificate of recognition is awarded to those members who make substantial contribution to organizing activities of the chapter and work towards building the social and intellectual environment of the department. The following are some of the recent recipients: Jacob Thomas (2023), Victoria (Tori) Belotti (2021), Yue Cao and Kan Zhang (2019), Adam Rumpf (2017), Hannah Albert (2016), Barrett Leslie (2013).
