Algebraic Statistics Seminar, Fall 2014
   DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS

Previous semesters:
Summer 2014, Spring 2014, Fall 2013.

General organizational notes:
The algebraic statistics research group will meet approximately once a week. Schedule is being discussed right now. Most likely first meeting during week of Sep 15th.

An Introduction to Numerical Algebraic Geometry: Algorithms and Applications
This is an Applied Mathematics Colloquium talk, geared to a general audience. It may be of interest to statisticians or anyone who needs to solve systems of polynomial (rational) equations. Examples of such systems arise when computing maximum likelihood estimates of statistical model parameters (i.e., setting derivatives of log-likelihood function to zero and solving).
