Dear AMAT Undergraduate and Graduate Students,

1. Menger Day, 12:45pm-8:30pm Monday, April 1.
2. Research talk and job advice talk, Tuesday 10am, 3:15pm
3. Buck McMorris summer stipend

1. Menger Day, Monday April 1, is the most important day in the year for
the Applied Mathematics Department.  Activities start at 12:45pm with the
AWM/SIAM lunch talk and go through 8:30pm, with the keynote Menger Lecture
from 6-7:15pm.  All events are in Hermann Hall Ballroom, on the south end
of Hermann Hall.  The Menger Lecturer this year is Harvard statistician

*12:50 p.m. – AWM/SIAM Clubs Meeting, Hermann Hall Ballroom*
Professor Xiao-Li Meng will give the talk “Bias-Variance Tradeoff: A
Fundamental Statistical Principle That Can Render You Love or Pain,” hosted
by the Association for Women in Mathematics and Society for Industrial and
Applied Mathematics clubs. All alumni are welcome. Light lunch provided.
*6:00 p.m. – Lecture, Hermann Hall Ballroom*
“How Small Are Our Big Data: Turning the 2016 Surprise into a 2020 Vision,”
delivered by Professor Xiao-Li Meng, Whipple V. N. Jones Professor of
Statistics, Harvard University Faculty of Arts & Sciences.

2. Menger Day activities continue on Tuesday, April 2, with a research talk
and job advice talk.

“Is It a Computing Algorithm or a Statistical Procedure – Can You Tell or
Should You Care?” delivered by Professor Xiao-Li Meng.

Room TBA*
“Conducting Highly Principled Data Science: A Statistician's Job and Joy,”
delivered by Professor Xiao-Li Meng.

3.  The Buck McMorris summer stipend is available this summer after a brief
hiatus.  Eligibility:

   - Undergraduate and early-career graduate students in an Applied Math
   degree as of Summer 2019
   - Full-time students in good standing, GPA 3.0 and above, not recipients
   of similar scholarships

The scholar will complete the equivalent of 10 weeks of full time research
(400 hours) with a faculty sponsor.  There is a $3,000 stipend.  *Contact a
potential faculty sponsor immediately if you are interested to discuss.  A
brief research plan is required.*  The deadline is Thursday March 28th,
11:59pm.
