Hello All,

This is just a friendly reminder of tomorrow's talk from the Applied
Mathematics department's Discrete Mathematics group. The talk will take
place *tomorrow, March 1, 12:45-1:45 in RE (E1) 258*, and *lunch will be
provided*. The group will be discussing some of their recent and ongoing
research. Please see the original announcement below for details.

Hello All,

Please join us this Wednesday for *free lunch* and a chance to see what's
new in the Applied Mathematics department!

This is the first in a series of special seminars jointly organized by the
SIAM Student Chapter and the IIT Applied Mathematics department. Each
seminar will feature one of the department's different research groups, and
will consist of some of its faculty members briefly discussing their recent
and ongoing research over lunch. These talks are meant to be casual and
accessible, and will be aimed at a general audience with a basic
mathematical background. If you are a new graduate student or an advanced
undergraduate looking for research topics or advisors, or if you just want
to know what your colleagues are working on, then this event is for you.

This first seminar will feature the *Discrete Applied Mathematics* group,
with talks from Dr. Robert Ellis, Dr. Hemanshu Kaul, and Dr. Michael
Pelsmajer. Discrete mathematics is the branch of mathematics containing
graph theory (the study of relations), combinatorics (the study of
countable structures), number theory (the study of the integers),
theoretical computer science, and much, much more. Aspects of discrete
mathematics show up in operations research, probability, algebra, and
geometry, to name a few. Background knowledge of the subject will not be

The talk will take place on *Wednesday, March 1, 12:45-1:45 in RE (E1) 258*.
Lunch will be provided. It is open to all, but Applied Mathematics
students and faculty are strongly encouraged to attend. We hope to see you
