Please join SIAM next Wednesday for free pizza and an introduction to the
fascinating and practical field of mathematical modeling. Undergraduates
of all majors are invited. The main focus of the talk will be the
Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), an international mathematical
modeling competition taking place in January. The MCM provides a fun
challenge, and an opportunity for large scholarship prizes and other awards.
If you think you might be interested in participating in the MCM, or you
would just like to find out more about it, please be sure to attend. See
our HawkLink announcement below for more details. We will send a reminder
next week with the event location. We hope to see you there!
Adam Rumpf, IIT SIAM Student Chapter President
Please join Professor Hemanshu Kaul on Wednesday, November 2nd at 4:30pm as
> he discusses the MCM competition
> <http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/> and more generally
> mathematical modeling with Tianci Zhu and Xintong Li. MCM is a prestigious
> international Mathematical Modeling competition for undergraduates held
> every year in January. Over 7000 teams from universities all over the world
> participate in this competition every year. In the past 2-3 years, teams
> from IIT have had notable success in this competition. This year the team
> of Tianci Zhu, Meng Wang, and Xintong Li placed among the top 9% of teams
> and were awarded as meritorious winners.
> This is a unique opportunity to ask questions and learn from the
> experiences of these students. If you are curious about mathematical
> modeling and how mathematical thinking and tools are applied to real-world
> problems; if you are wondering about participation in the MCM but are not
> sure how to get started, then this is the event for you. Don't miss it!
> All undergraduate students, regardless of their major, are welcome.
> Location details will be sent out next week. Free pizza will be provided.
