Dear Colleague,

We are accepting applications for the 2016 MSRI-Undergraduate Program
(MSRI-UP). We would appreciate it if you would pass this email and flyer
on to your undergraduate students so that they might consider applying.

Thank you very much,

Suzanne Weekes

Dear Students,

The *2016 Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program
(MSRI-UP) <http://www.msri.org/msri_ups/807> *is accepting applications.

See the attached flyer.

Applications <https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/403> submitted by
February 14, 2016 will receive full consideration; applications submitted
by Feb*r*uary 28, 2016 may be considered in a second round. *Students who
have had a linear algebra course and a course in which they have had to
write proofs are eligible to apply.*

Due to funding restrictions, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are
eligible to apply and the program cannot accept foreign students regardless
of funding.

The MSRI-UP <https://www.msri.org/up> is a comprehensive REU program whose
aim is to increase ethnic and racial diversity in the mathematical
sciences. Each year, we have a new research topic and the topic for this
year is Sandpile Groups, a topic at the intersection of group theory,
combinatorics, linear algebra and algebraic geometry.

The research program will be led by Prof. Luis Garcia-Puente of Sam Houston
State University.

Each of the 18 students selected for the program will:

· learn a modern mathematical topic and engage in interesting
mathematical research during a six-week summer program at the MSRI in
Berkeley, California;

· receive room & board, a $3100 summer stipend, and transportation
to & from Berkeley;

· have the opportunity to present summer research at national
conferences in the year following the summer program; and

· be introduced to a network of mentors and given advice and
assistance in navigating the process of applying to graduate programs and
fellowships.

For further information, please do contact me or any one of the other
