Third Annual IIT Karl Menger Lecture and Award:
Remembering Karl Menger
On Monday, April 20, the Department of Applied Mathematics will host a
day of events [http://www.iit.edu/csl/am/about/menger/#SCHEDULE] to
honor Prof. Karl Menger,
[http://www.iit.edu/csl/am/about/menger/about.shtml] who taught
mathematics at IIT from 1946-1971. He is considered one of the finest
mathematicians of the 20th century, and one of IIT’s greatest
teachers.

Prof. Richard Durrett of Cornell University will deliver the IIT Karl
Menger Lecture, “Truth Is Stranger than Fiction: A Look at Some
Improbabilities,” at 4:30 p.m., MTCC Ballroom. Durrett will discuss
several situations in which probabilities are misunderstood in the
mathematical world, using examples to explain and clarify the issues.
Durrett is a distinguished mathematician working in probability and
stochastic analysis with applications in ecology and genetics. He is a
member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences.

The lecture will be preceded by a gathering of recent (1999-2008)
alumni, a reception hosted by Professor Jerry Frank, a viewing of
student research posters, and a research presentation by Professor
Tomasz Bielecki and students Andrea and Luca Vidozzi, “How to Model
Credit Markets If You Must”; and followed by a ceremony presenting the
IIT Karl Menger Award to a student who has exhibited exceptional
scholarship. A dinner concludes the day’s events. All are invited to
attend. View the schedule of events here
