                    Thirty First Midwest Probability Colloquium

                    First Announcement (March 3, 2009)

Please share the enclosed information with interested colleagues and
graduate students.

The Thirty-first Midwest Probability Colloquium will be held at
Northwestern University on October 15-17, 2009. The program was
organized by a committee consisting of Robert Neel, Krishna Athreya
and Robert Anderson (chair)

The program will feature the following speakers:

             Joel Spencer (Courant), two lectures

             Maury Bramson (Minnesota), one lecture

Sunder Sethuraman (Iowa State), one lecture

The Friday lectures will be held (provisionally)in Swift Hall, Room
107---which is directly across the lawn from the Mathematics Department. The
Saturday lectures are also (provisionally) scheduled for Swift Hall, Room

The Midwest Probability Colloquium will begin with a registration period at
2:30 pm, Friday. Spencer's first talk will begin at 3:00 pm. Following a
coffee break, the second talk (Bramson) will begin at 4:30. There will be a
hotel reception for all participants from 5:30-7:15 pm. On Saturday morning
the first talk (Spencer) will begin at 9:30 am, followed by a coffee break
and the regular annual business meeting. The conference will conclude with
Sethuraman's talk from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.

Rooms have been reserved at three different locations:

             a. Hotel Orrington 1-847-866-8700

             b. Homestead Residence 1-847-475-3300

             c. Best Western University Plaza 1-847-491-6400

Participants who prefer to stay in Skokie may consider one of the following,
where no group reservations have yet been made:

             d. Comfort Inn North shore Skokie 1-847-679-4200

             e. North Shore Doubletree Skokie 1-847-329-4324

The Orrington has blocked off 40 rooms for our group. This is a very
comfortable and pleasant hotel, quoting a rate of $149.00 Sharing a room can
reduce the effective cost to each person.

The rooms at the Homestead are $95.00 a day, which includes parking and
breakfast. The cutoff date is October 1.

The Best Western (formerly Holiday Inn) is located a bit further from the
campus, on Sherman Avenue just south of Grove St. The cutoff date is Sept.

The Comfort Inn, which is located in Skokie, quotes a group rate of $89.00
and will provide a buffet breakfast and van service to and from the meeting.
Their cutoff date is October 10.

The North Shore Doubletree is the former Skokie Hilton hotel. It is directly
opposite the Westfield/Old Orchard shopping center. The above hotel
information is subject to change. For the most recent information, please
check our website:

We expect to be able to partially supplement the room rates by conference
funds, as we have done in the past. Please note that, when making
reservations, IT IS ESSENTIAL to give the name of the group: Midwest
Probability Colloquium, in order to be included in the list for possible
reimbursement; otherwise your name will be lost among a large group of
unaffiliated hotel guests.

As in the past, we expect to have NSF funds to offset the expenses of
graduate students and other younger investigators. According to NSF
guidelines, the term "younger investigator" refers to individuals who
received the PhD after June 30, 2002. All such requests should be received
by the conference organizer on or before September 15, in order to be
eligible for consideration. In every case, first consideration will be given
to chronological priority.

As in the past, we expect to have a Thursday Program, focused on a special
topic which has some overlap with the Friday/Saturday program.
