We don't get many speakers that I can recommend for undergraduates, so
you all should seriously consider coming to this talk! The speaker is
the featured Friday morning speaker at the ISMAA conference, and we're
lucky to be able to hear him as well because he knows (& I think works
with) Professor Frank.
This will be more of a research talk than a popular math talk, and there
are some things that you should know about research talks in mathematics:
Don't expect to understand everything. For an _average_ 50 minute talk,
I'd estimate: Everyone understands the first 10 minutes. People with
the recommended background understand the first half hour. Experts in
the area understand 45 minutes. Only the speaker understands the last 5
minutes.
Now this particular speaker is not average in any sense - it will be
much better, and that's why I'm recommending it. But still, it's a math
talk. For example, you might want to bring something to do, discreetly,
in case you get completely lost with no hope of recovery. (I often do
this.)
That being said, I'm confident that this talk will be really good, and
you should consider attending.
