*Special Seminar* - “This Talk Assumes only Univariate Calculus”

When: Monday, January 30, 2017, 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm

Where: RE 106

*Title: **Finding Structure in Randomness*

*Speaker: Despina Stasi **Department of Applied Mathematics*

*Illinois Institute of Technology*

Abstract: In everyday life, we consider randomness as the absence of
pattern, of predictability, of structure. But, in fact, objects generated
at random can have very real structure; random problems can give insights
to the structure of hard instances; and randomness can be harnessed to
design algorithms that can solve problems more efficiently and more simply
than any known deterministic algorithm. This talk will survey some of these
ideas through problems and applications in graph theory, artificial
intelligence, and cryptography.

No prior knowledge in these topics is required.
