Greetings everyone:

Please join the Applied Mathematics Department for the following
colloquia. One is a special event held tomorrow commemorating the
life of Professor Gene Golub, an influential professor of numerical
analysis whose contributions have helped shape the field in
innumerable ways. Refreshments will be served at both, and all
graduate students are encouraged to attend.

Friday, Feb 29 SB 113 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm

"Existence of homoclinic intersections"
Abstract:
"Palis conjectures that every diffeomorphism can be C1 approximated
either by a Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms, or by one that has a
transverse homoclinic intersection (a horseshoe). Briefly, the
conjecture states that every diffeomorphism can be C1 approximated
either by one that is very simple, or by one that is very complicated.
In this talk we report some recent progress about this conjecture."

See you there!
