[grads] PhD Qualifying Exam

Dear all,

   the department will hold the Ph.D. qualifying exams twice a year,
tentatively scheduled shortly after Spring semester ends and the other
around the dates when Fall semester begins. The format of the exam
will be an oral exam, in which you will be asked questions 
in all of the three core areas you choose.

   If you intend to take the exam this Spring or the coming Fall, please
notify me at least five weeks in advance so that your exam can be arranged.
