Abstracts
1. Monday, September 24, 2007 - Peter Kritzer, of the University of
Salzburg, Austria presents "Sequences, Subsequences, and Discrepancy" in
room E1 106
Abstract: In this talk I will first give a short introduction to some basic
ideas of the theory of uniform distribution modulo one. In the second part
of the talk I am going to discuss some nice results from joint work with R.
Hofer, G. Larcher, and F. Pillichshammer (all University of Linz)
2. Thursday, September 27, 2007 - Jeffrey Weiss, of the University of
Colorado, Boulder presents "Coherent Structures in Geophysical Turbulence"
in room E1 123
Abstract: Large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows are extremely turbulent
and are strongly influenced by rapid rotation and strong stable
stratification. Such flows spontaneously self-organize into coherent
structures such as jets and vortices. In this talk I will review recent work
on structures in turbulence from several perspectives: structures in
turbulence theory, the dynamics and evolution of structures, their impact on
chemical reactions, and their role in weather forecasting.
Thank you and see you there,
