Coherent Structures in Geophysical Turbulence

Large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows are extremely turbulent and are strongly influenced by rapid rotation and strong stable stratification. Such flows spontaneously self-organize into coherent structures such as jets and vortices. In this talk I will review recent work on structures in turbulence from several perspectives: structures in turbulence theory, the dynamics and evolution of structures, their impact on chemical reactions, and their role in weather forecasting.
